Defiance
In a world of conformists, defiance brings you closer to change than any other self-help advice.
defiance /dɪˈfʌɪən(t)s/ (noun) open resistance; bold disobedience. “an act of defiance”
When the world tells you to grow up and get a job, but you have a different plan, you must act with defiance. Why?
Because conformity is so popular that individual ideas are considered immoral. You are asked to follow society’s rules and guidelines. And if you don’t, you become a traitor to your kin. You are seen as a bad person - a disappointment to everyone’s perceived idea of the good life.
You are told to accept the status quo because it is secure. You are assured that it leads to success. Everyone wants you to join their side because they’ve been told it’s the right one. You are encouraged to eat the food they eat, watch the movies they watch, and scroll the reels they create.
The world will use its perverse tools to tempt you into conformity. Mindless entertainment, artificial food, exposure to unnecessary imagery - things that mold your mind into a dull, distracted, and desperate machine.
Accept this and you lose your originality. You become a zombie controlled by the rules of an ego-stroking fraternity that trusts only in its own righteousness. You lose free thought and original ideas. You stop looking beyond the limitations of your surroundings. You start lacking the motivation to become someone worthy.
You will have little control over your emotions. The psychological impact of conformity is immense. Low self-esteem, high frustration, an inability to accept new ideas, resentment toward everyone, and an overall lack of personal fulfillment take root. You become merely a “part of the group.” And when everything falls apart and you’re lying on your deathbed, realization will crash over you in waves of regret for having lost yourself.
Tomorrow, don’t watch any news channel. Go online and research something you saw on TV the day before. It’s a small act of defiance. The hero in your story must be the person you see in the mirror every day. Not your physical presence, but the ideas, perceptions, observations, opinions, and thoughts that make up your entire being.
You step out of the matrix by having just one original thought. Individuality is not a curse but a blessing in a society run by power-hungry conformists. Try being more original. Voice your opinions. See things from a new perspective and share them with those willing to listen. Think for yourself rather than letting others decide for you. It’s scary, but jumping into the river of authenticity will carry you to the ocean of personal fulfillment.
Of course, you will face criticism. You will be outcast, even by those you once trusted. You will be labeled a revolutionary.
And that, my friend, is a compliment.
Defiance is a revolution. It’s a precursor to bold ideas. It’s what brings lasting change. When you go against conventional wisdom, you start thinking critically. About the current state of the world. About those around you. About yourself.
You become open-minded, understanding, accepting. You stop feeling satisfied with how things are and begin doing your best to change them, even if it means disappointing some people. You stay curious longer and make informed decisions. You nurture creativity and innovate in unexpected ways. You feel a constant urge to bring something new into existence. Ideas begin to flow as effortlessly as water once the trash is cleared from a blocked drain.
Then something strange happens.
You gain an edge over the conformists who never stepped outside their bubble. They call you an intelligent genius who “got lucky.” Your decisions earn respect because life seems to be working in your favor. Opportunities appear that you never heard of before.
Beware. Don’t fall into this trap.
If you’re not careful, you’ll confine yourself within the box of your own originality and become an egomaniac. You’ll start believing your perspective is the only correct one. That’s exactly what you escaped.
Many people desire your life, but few are willing to take action to achieve it. It requires defiance. Leaving comfort zones. Abandoning security. Venturing into the unknown. Forming original opinions. All things they struggle to fathom.
Stay open-minded as you receive admiration for your lifestyle. Stay humble in the process of becoming yourself. Guide if you must, but don’t preach. Offer one original thought and invite others to explore it. Gather people for change, but allow individual ideas to flow freely. You can help build a society that thinks critically and focuses on collective growth.
It all begins with a single original thought.
A society transforms when even one person steps back from the thoughtless acceptance of the current reality. It takes courage. And if you’ve read this far, you’ve already decided to take that step.
Do it now.
